North Alabama Cave Tour
Cathedral Caverns: A historical Spring Break adventure for the whole family!
Looking for a fun and educational spring break activity? Look no further than Cathedral Caverns in beautiful northeast Alabama!
We recently took a family trip and were amazed by the caverns’ history and natural beauty. Did you know they were originally called Bat Cave? That name definitely doesn’t capture the awe-inspiring formations inside!
The guided tour takes you through breathtaking stalagmites, stalactites, and even a “frozen waterfall.” The best part? At the very end of your journey inside the cave, they turn off the lights, giving you a glimpse into the cave’s complete darkness - a truly unforgettable experience! The tour lasted approximately 90 minutes and we walked about 1.5 miles round trip!
Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the scenic picnic tables outside the cave entrance. Cathedral Caverns State Park also features gemstone mining, an activity for any age, but especially popular with younger visitors. A bag or bucket of mining dirt (seeded with either rough cut gemstones or fossils) is purchased and then sifted through running water in custom-made flumes. You can then identify your finds using the gemstone identification display. It’s the perfect way to make a day of it and explore the park’s hiking trails and natural surroundings.
